What Leaders Can Learn From the War in Ukraine

“The true soldier doesn’t fight because he hates what is in front of him. He fights because he loves what is behind him.” - G.K. Chesterton

It has been more than a year since one of the world’s most powerful militaries began an attempt to overtake a nation of less than half its population.?

Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. According to statista.com, as of 2023, the Russian military consists of more than 1.3 million total personnel and over 830,000 active soldiers. By comparison, Ukraine has 500,000 total military personnel and just 200,000 active soldiers. Russia has over 4,000 total aircraft at its disposal while Ukraine can claim just a little more than 300 (“Comparison of the Military Capabilities of Russia and Ukraine as of 2023”).?

So, the questions are clear: What’s taking Russia so long to overtake a nation that it is twice the size of? How can it be explained that a military with Russia’s resources can’t seem to fully subdue an opposition that consists of many civilians, with no military training, that are now holding and firing weapons for the first time in their lives?

The answer is in the motivation of the combatants. The answer is LOVE.??

The Russian soldiers fight because they are ordered to do so. They fight because it is their job to do so. They fight because it is the mission that has been given to them by their government.?

The Ukrainians fight because their wives and children are in danger nearby. They fight because they are standing on their own streets. They fight to defend the neighborhoods that they call home.?

The Russian forces are motivated by duty while the Ukrainian forces fight behind a fierce determination to defend all the things that they love the most in the world.

Love is the most powerful human motivator and it can compel people to do extraordinary things. If we want to inspire the people we lead to perform at levels that don’t make statistical sense, we have to inspire them to act on love.??

Love to Lead. Lead With Love.?
