What Laser Screw welding will achieve for new age car manufacturers
All auto manufactures like "simple and slim" production lines. This means small plant investment, less operating costs, shorter cycle time and less manpower. Less manpower is a big savings because auto plants can take freed up resources out of their plants, and redistributing them back into the system elsewhere.
New laser technology will help auto car plants to reduce length of production line. Body components will be joined together using an advanced form of laser spot welding Toyota calls “laser screw welding” (LSW).
LSW is designed for faster and more efficient welding for both steel and aluminum bodies when compared to spot welding. In its initial form, laser screw welding will alternate with spot welds on car bodies.
The new technology is also predicted to contribute to a 55 percent decrease in plant C02 emissions.
Toyota’s manufacturing process began utilizing laser screw welding in 2013. Replacing resistance spot welding with laser screw welding is going to give big competitive edge to auto makers. Schematic diagram below explains process.

Interesting. The acronym LSW can be confused with Laser Seam Welding though.
