In what language should you write your blog?

Short answer: There is no short answer.
In one of my previous blog posts, I mentioned where to start blogging and some hints on what to write. So, let's picture this: you decided which platform you will publish your blog and the subject - great! Now, the daunting question: in what language should I blog?
I'd say, that depends on two things: you audience's language - the readers you want to reach language and your own language skills of that language – if this is not your first language.
Blogging in English: a non-native English speaker point of view.
I don't know if you guys noticed, but I'm not a native English speaker. My first language is Portuguese, and I only started learning English when I was 22 years old. Of course, I could improve a lot my English as I lived in London for 15 years. But I know I will never reach the same language level of a native speaker.
Secondly, when I decided to start my blog, Emerging Markets Today, I realised it had to be done in English. My audience is global as I write about all emerging countries not only Brazil. For me, blogging in Portuguese would be very limiting in the size of the audience I wanted to reach.
But don't be put off if you are not sure if you level of English isn't perfect. I also improved a lot my written English. When I see my first blog posts, I really notice how different they are from my latest ones. The more you write the more you will improve.
Do I still wish I had a proof-reader to proof all my post? You bet I do! I'd love to have someone to work 24/7 free for me. Obviously, that never is going to happen. Nonetheless, I still write in English.
If your audience doesn't speak / read in English
Then you ask me: but what if my audience is not English speaking? So, don't write in English. Again, it all depends on your audience.
Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin and Hindi are the top most spoken first languages in the world – more than English.
English is only perceived as the most spoken because people tend to learn that as second language.
You can create a successful blog in any language you want - You can have a relatively small but captive audience. And there is nothing wrong with it!
Always think about who you will be writing to.

1 年You're right! The choice of language for your blog depends on several factors, including your target audience, your own language proficiency, and the topics you plan to cover, as we always say in our translation company. Congrats for the article!
