What to know about the risks of carotid artery disease
Knowing if you're at risk of carotid artery disease can go a long way when it comes to stroke prevention. Here's why, according to Dr Phong Thanh Dargon, vascular surgeon at UP Medical.
What is carotid artery disease?
The carotid arteries are the main blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the brain.
Carotid artery disease (carotid artery stenosis) occurs when these arteries accumulate plaque build-up, causing them to narrow (atherosclerosis). This build-up reduces the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain and can become severe enough to cause a stroke. ?A stroke can also occur if a piece of plaque breaks off and travels to the brain, blocking off blood flow. ?
In many cases there are no symptoms of carotid artery disease before a stroke occurs. Sometimes, the first indication of carotid artery disease is a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is a “mini stroke” that can cause temporary confusion, dizziness, difficulties with vision and speech, sudden numbness or weakness, and sudden headache.
Understanding the risk factors
The best way to prevent a stroke or TIA from occurring is knowing the risk factors. Some of the factors that can increase an individual’s chances of carotid artery disease include:
Understanding your risk factors means you can take the necessary steps to manage them. For example, controlling your blood sugar if you have diabetes, or stopping the use of tobacco products.

When to see a doctor
If you have any stroke or TIA symptoms, you’ll want to seek immediate medical attention.
If you have a family history of carotid artery disease or any of the above risk factors, talk to your doctor about what you can do to reduce your risk of stroke.
Early detection with ultrasound can be key to preventing the devasting effects of stroke.
Treatment may include medication, lifestyle modifications, plaque removal (carotid endarterectomy) or carotid stenting.
