Amazon keyword Geo Rank - it is real!
This is one of the best podcast episodes I’ve listened to this year. Danny had Garfield Moore on the show, who keeps a low profile but is a pioneer in understanding and making effective use of geo-rank data. What is geo-rank? It’s best explained as the difference in the organic rank of a product in Amazon search results for a given keyword, depending on where the shopper is searching from. According to Garfield, it’s determined by shopping activity in that locale following searches. He asserts there are 500 or so geographic zones, so tracking keyword rank with most tools that aggregate data or take a snapshot in one geo gives you a very narrow view. As we all know, making changes based on misleading data is a no-no that we want to avoid.?
So what's the solution? Technology that can show how products in your catalog are ranking across relevant geographic zones so you can make more targeted adjustments to overall marketing efforts. Since targeting by zip code or geographic area is not yet a mature feature with sponsored ads, you have to turn to other methods like off-Amazon traffic or ADSP. I’ve asked so many people about this over the years, including Amazonians and staff at both Helium10 and Junglescout and have never got a satisfactory response from anyone. Listening to him explain it made me feel like I was not the only one with this in the back of my mind the past 4 years. We are always interested in how organic and paid traffic impact each other inside the marketplace so we’ll be giving his tool Rank Diagnostics a try and report back on what we learn.
