What Keeps You Up At Night?

What keeps you up at night?

As a leader of people we frequently have a lot on our minds…our team’s happiness, their productivity, endless projects in flight, strategic objectives… and endless lists of “To Do’s”.

When I’m asked what keeps me up at night, over the past few years it’s been the same thing…re-recruit, re-recruit, re-recruit. What do I mean by re-recruit? My mind is constantly thinking about how to re-recruit my existing team. How I can most effectively retain my current employees?

Recently we’ve seen salaries skyrocket and the employment market has slowed down just a little, we are now seeing job seekers getting 2 job offers instead of 5 job offers. Retaining your current employees is the most cost-effective move you can make because hiring is expensive and time-consuming. Regardless of skyrocketing salaries, most people are seeking purposeful work that matters not just a bigger paycheck.

There are a couple of things to consider when re-recruiting your team. It all begins with trust. A trusting relationship between you and your employee. As a leader, your people need to be able to communicate with you honestly for you to be able to make adjustments in efforts to retain them and keep them engaged. I’ve found trust develops when you get to know people at a personal level. Asking about their pets, kids, and hobbies outside of work, and caring about them as a person can help build trust. When you meet with your employee ask them about personal stuff first, then jump into business.

Every team member has different needs and goals…be sure to have a good understanding of their needs. What are their career desires? What do they enjoy most? Why do they enjoy working at your company?

Some key factors to retain your team:

Growth: Are your people growing personally??Create development plans.?Invest time in getting to know them and what makes them excited. Learn their career goals and discuss how you can incorporate that into their position.?Some ideas…they could mentor more junior people. They could help with onboarding new employees.

Challenge: People want to be challenged otherwise they are bored and lose interest. Learn what comes easy to them and what areas interest them.?Some ideas…put them on special projects or stretch assignments to keep them challenged.

Engagement: Is your team excited about the work that they are doing? Do they believe in what they are doing? If not, is there something holding them back??Is that a barrier you can work through??

Knowing these key factors are sure to help you in re-recruiting your employees.
