What is a Job Title?
Having been in recruitment for a number of years now, I've seen my fair share of reasons why people are & aren't interested in jobs. Recently it has become apparent there are some who consider the "job title" as a huge part when considering a new job/position, but why? What does a job title say about you? Does a job title give you extra responsibility? Does it give you a sense of self?
Based upon my experience a job title gives you a little self satisfaction but is nothing without the job responsibilities. As an example, lets take a Project Director for a building company, he/she runs the majority of the business only reporting to a Managing Director, daily tasks include managing around 20 people, finance/budgets as well as bringing new projects/contracts into the business while the company work on construction projects up to the value of $50-$80million, now we have a Project Manager working for a large business who work on projects up to the value of $1billion, currently the Project Manager is leading construction activities on projects up to the value of $150million, reporting to a Project Director, while also looking at the budgets/finance of the project and managing a large workforce in the region of 30 people.... could the Project Director be considered for the Project Managers position and vice-versa?
On the face of it, the Project Manager has the experience of working on larger projects to step up into the Project Directors position.... but would they really want to if you take into consideration the company they currently work for & the prospect of working on smaller projects?
Alternatively would the Project Director want to take up the Project Managers position as the title is considered "lesser"? Or is it? The responsibilities are greater considering the prospects to work on larger projects and challenge themselves, work with a larger/well-known organisation and with the opportunity to progress within the company while managing more people.
So where does the job title come into it? The job title is the 1st thing you look at when receiving any kind of job update or information but in fact should be 1 of the lesser reasons as to why you have decided to take up a new job or look into it further.
The responsibilities from one organisation to another differ, the responsibilities should be reviewed in detail and should play a part in your interest in a specific job. Who the company is, should also play a part as they could be offering you an opportunity to deliver prestigious mega construction/engineering projects which are globally known/renowned.
Your prospects as well as the companies is the final big part player in your decision to take your interest further. What long term prospects are the company offering you - promotion? a pay increase? opportunity to expand your responsibilities? For your long term career prospects with a company, what are the companies plans going forward, to continue working on big/iconic projects or are they looking to diversify?
So how important is a job title if a company is offering you more responsibilities, better prospects, the chance to gain some fantastic new experience? More money & a better package?

9 年Far too many people in the Middle East look at Job Title first and then job role...and then consider a step down in job role equates to a step backwards in career development. Look at what the job itself is going to provide in terms of development and make a judgement then, a title is just a title!
