I have worked with some truly brilliant people throughout my career, and I work daily with experts from some of the biggest names in the IT world. I've worked on numerous multi-million dollar enterprise software deployments with hundreds of the best resources available in their field.
At first, this was all a humbling experience, working alongside some of the brightest in the industry.
Then one day I realized that I no longer felt humbled, I felt like I BELONGED in the room. That's when it dawned on me, that I now walk among giants!
With that realization being fresh and an admitted sense of pride in being able to say it, I wondered how I can help others find their path.
So, follow me, and try not to get stepped on by our giant friends:
- Don't be okay with not knowing something, thirst for knowledge. The IT sector is an ever-evolving field, try to keep up.
- Identify and master your domain. What are you naturally good at and how can you leverage that strength to help your team and advance your career?
- Like an athlete aspiring to, "Go Pro", be a student of the game. Learn everything you can from those around you.
- Be a part of the solution. If you know something needs doing, don't wait for someone else to do it.
- Get comfortable with hopping in the driver's seat. Take ownership of things and keep momentum going.
- Encourage building a culture of teamwork and mentorship that values the statement, "I need help!", as much as, "How can I help?".
- Challenge things that don't make sense.
- Never step on the toes today, that are connected to the a$$ that you may have to kiss tomorrow. Be a professional and interact with others in a courteous manner.
- Last but not least, the three C's... Communicate, Communicate, & Communicate.
