What I've learned so far about getting the most out of ChatGPT and 'New Bing'

For starters... you're not going to get replaced by AI... But you may soon get completely outpaced by colleagues who know how to leverage AI.

The good news is that the barrier to entry in leveraging this technology is now very low (Honestly, just watch some videos on YouTube about 'prompt engineering').

Your own personal intern

ChatGPT is an assistive technology, not a replacement for human problem-solving and expression. This is why you chat with it. It needs your feedback to do its best work for you.

ChatGPT is basically like having a very confident grad who can do about 15 hours of research and writing for you in seconds. Like any overconfident grad, it occasionally produces nonsense. Sometimes that is due to limitations in its abilities, and sometimes it is due to you providing deficient direction and supervision.

Getting the best out of ChatGPT depends on what you are trying to achieve with it. The basics (Prompt engineering):

  1. Tell ChatGPT its role (e.g., you are a lawyer practising in NSW Australia who specializes in work injury claims).
  2. Tell ChatGPT the nature, context, and purpose of the task and the audience it is for.
  3. Tell ChatGPT the format in which you want the answer (e.g., short sentences, lists, schedules, tables, etc.).

Improve the results (Feedback):

  1. Correct it where it makes mistakes.
  2. Ask it to expand on something and break it down in more detail where part of the answer is glossed over.
  3. If it stops partway through writing an answer, instruct it to "continue."

Get better results faster (Initiate and collaborate)

When writing content or fixing code, you will get better results faster if you take a stab at doing it yourself first. Then tell ChatGPT what you are doing and what you are trying to achieve, and provide it with what you have done so far (e.g., paste in your content or your code). This can make the difference between burning an hour or getting the result you need in seconds.

Another technique is to ask ChatGPT to research all the issues that you should address when producing some piece of content (e.g., a contact, an article, a set of instructions or a policy). You can then ask it to generate that content for you and instruct it to cover the issues that it just enumerated for you.

When to use 'New Bing'

ChatGPT is better for composition and working through a more involved task. New Bing is more for short, simple questions. It limits you to 15 questions and doesn't save your conversation like ChatGPT does. New Bing provides references for its responses so that you can check results and slash research time.

Where we are heading now

ChatGPT has drastically lowered the barrier to becoming a tech-enabled professional. One who leverages technology to accelerate through the cognitively laborious parts of the job to get more done. ChatGPT has raised the value of:

  1. Having a working knowledge across many domains so that you can supervise and create across a broader range - providing guidance while AI fills in the blanks and does the legwork.
  2. Being able to give clear, concise instructions and problem definitions and give precise feedback.
  3. Being able to break large tasks up and delegate the lower-skilled laborious parts to AI to maximize the use of your time and energy.

ChatGPT has drastically lowered the time required to learn and get results in new areas. Its capacity to generate and correct content and code means spending more time making progress and less time burning yourself out sifting through search results and internet forums. ChatGPT is slashing the time lost to procrastination by making it easier to get started on

BONUS

You can also use ChatGPT to proofread for you. Just paste your work into ChatGPT and ask it to proofread it. It will automatically correct everything. It will also tell you all the corrections it made if you ask it. (Yes, I wrote this article by hand, but ChatGPT proofread it for me.)
