What I've Learned Photographing During A Pandemic

After a very busy year, unlike any other… I wanted to take a few moments to share some reflections on my experiences working with schools, communications teams, administrators, and students. Even in an unprecedented year, there were lessons that I learned and will carry forward in my work with clients.
1. Advanced Planning Is Critical
This year, more than in years past, it was essential to meet, listen, and strategize extensively with clients in advance of our shoot. As clients share their goals, I make sure that we can translate them into a shot list. Questions I commonly ask include, What photos do we need to capture, and how can we achieve this image?
2. In-Person Learning Is Joyful
In spite of masks and physical distance, the sense of community and visible energy of being together in real life creates positivity. After long periods apart, I routinely found teachers and students had renewed appreciation for the opportunity to be reunited on campus. We can capture this excitement and pleasure through photography!
3. Expect the Unexpected
This year, things were so unstable. Everything could turn on a dime: classrooms move at the last minute, CDC guidelines shift, random testing are announced, etc. Fortunately, I’ve always been a very flexible photographer and person—it comes with the job description! The pandemic served as a reminder that nothing is guaranteed and we all need to just go with the flow and be flexible!
4. Take Breaks
Wearing a mask all day is difficult for teachers, students, staff…and photographers! Don’t forget to drink lots of water, and create opportunities to take mask breaks.
5. Express Gratitude
We all missed being together in person last spring. I’m no exception: My six-month hiatus from photography was depressing. Working with clients, photographing, and capturing joyful, positive moments renews my energy and passion. I love my job, and I have been honored to document this historic time in education.
6. Be Proud
All educators should be applauded for their accomplishment of getting students back on campus and maintaining safety throughout the year. Their resilience, perseverance, and adaptability are remarkable.
What Did You Learn This Year?
These are my takeaways from the school year. What lessons did you learn? I would love to hear your insights, so please take a second to share them with me.
