What I've learned from putting myself out there.

Happy 2024 to you! Hope this message finds you well despite the challenges we've all faced lately. Last year was a rollercoaster for so many, and honestly, it feels like an understatement to say it was tough. There's been a lot of heartache and loss, and I genuinely feel for everyone going through a rough time. Jobs have been lost, some are still hanging in there without work, dealing with bills, mortgages, and all the craziness life throws our way. It's been a tough ride.

I've been working in Talent Acquisition for 15 years, leading global teams, diving deep into hiring trends, and building marketing and branding strategies for big-name companies. It's been an exciting process– creating hiring schemes, training fantastic recruiters, and meeting some incredible folks along the way. I've chatted with over a million people, sharing why they should join the companies I've worked with and getting to know their unique career journeys.

Like many,? I got laid off in October 2023, a first for me. And, like many of you, I've been applying to positions? left and right, reconnecting with old colleagues, trying to give myself a bit of a facelift career-wise, even exploring new industries. Gotta say, it's not easy out there. But, in the midst of the chaos, I've got this gut feeling that something good is around the corner.

This whole experience is also teaching me a thing or two about putting yourself out there. Mostly that it’s tough out there. And even worse when you're met with radio silence. But, you know what? We've got to keep at it. Job hunting is a crazy competitive game, and it's scary putting yourself out there, but vulnerability might just be the key to unlocking some seriously cool opportunities and growth.

Here are a few things I've been keeping in mind along the way:

  • Trying to figure out what makes me, well, me. What's my personal brand? What makes me stand out?
  • Being more present online, throwing my two cents into the community and sharing the ups and downs.
  • My resume has seen more edits than I care to admit – seriously, it's practically a novel now.
  • Reaching out to my network, sharing my excitement, and explaining how I can bring something to the table.
  • Accepting rejection is part of the game. It stings, but it's also a chance to learn and get better for the next round.

It's a bumpy ride, and keeping a positive mindset is the real challenge. Focusing on the wins, staying strong when things get tough, and celebrating even the tiniest victories – that's what keeps me going.

By putting myself out there with all the authenticity, confidence, and resilience I can muster, I'm holding onto the belief that the right opportunity is just around the corner. Today, I wanted to share my unfiltered journey with you. It's tough opening up, but I'm right there with you, and together, we'll push through this craziness.

Cheers to the journey

Cass ??

Dear HR personalities and recruitment specialists, Greetings of the day. I have been actively looking for a job for one month and have applied for more than one hundred jobs through Indeed, but I haven’t gotten a single call from the employers' side. I have been actively dropping my resume through walking, and again, they responded that they are not hiring until March.?I am an MBA student who recently enrolled at the University of Canada West (UCW). I have 10 years of experience (recently five years in HR/recruitment and the remaining five years in the hospitality and mobility sectors in Nepal) I am new here in Canada and live in British Columbia, Surrey, Canada. I am open to working in any entry-level position where I can learn about the Canadian work culture. I appreciate your support. Thank you so much for your kind support. I have been feeling a bit blue about the journey this week and reading your piece made me feel less alone and re-energized to keep moving ahead. Nice one Cassandra!

Your instinct is correct, Cassandra! Something great is around the corner ? You’re one of the kindest, smartest, most positive, and encouraging people I know. I just know you’ll find your next gig soon, and we’ll celebrate ?? (Also, one million people? Wowsers! That’s incredible!)
