What it's like working for VIVO

Our Head of Learning and Development at VIVO, Rachel McGowan, shares with us why she wanted to join VIVO and what has been like working for a Joint Venture.

Why did I want to join?

The reason I wanted to work for VIVO was because I wanted the opportunity to work for Jerry Moloney again on the MOD estate. Having spent over 7 years working on the old Regional Prime and NHP contracts it was an environment I knew well and had always enjoyed working in.

The opportunity to work for a JV again and a brand-new business was a bonus.?I knew Jerry, as Managing Director, was a leader who I could trust, and I knew he would have the best team around him. I was also excited by the prospect of what I could build at VIVO from an L&D perspective. There seemed to be a real ambition from Jerry and his team about developing and investing in People and I was encouraged by this.

Joining VIVO

On joining VIVO, I was immediately impressed by the team I was joining. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful in supporting my onboarding, bringing me up to speed on where we were up to in setting up and mobilisation.

I joined VIVO before my line manager, Cheryl, but there was no shortage in friendly faces in the leadership team who were happy to give me both support and direction when it was needed. At the same time there was a real feeling of autonomy and trust that was flowing down from Jerry and his team that empowered me to make decisions and get on with the task at the hand. For me this was, amongst other things, building the VIVO Academy and developing our L&D Strategy and training plan.

Working for VIVO

Working for VIVO during this last 6 months has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Standing VIVO up as a new business and mobilising has meant a lot of work and some long days but I can honestly say I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

The VIVO team are incredibly hard working and passionate about delivering the best possible service to our customer. Everyone has an important part to play in VIVO achieving its goals. There is a real collaborative culture already being cultivated within the organisation with the Senior team really adopting an Inspire and Empower leadership style. ?

It is also clear each day in work that we are putting the ‘Customer and Families First’. There is a focus in everything we do that we improve the Lived Experience for our Armed Forces. We have done so much work with all of our stakeholders to really understand what matters most to them so that the service we deliver is going to make a difference to how they Work, Live and Train.
