What Italy Has Taught Me: reflecting on my first five days with @cimbaitaly

Just one week ago, I arrived at the beautiful CIMBA campus, located in Paderno del Grappa, Italy. In this short time I have already made amazing memories, met new students, explored Italy, and gained global knowledge from my courses. I have had the privilege of taking Molly Rapert's Global Consumer course. She has encouraged us to reflect on our experience so far, here are five valuable insights I have gained in five days.

  1. The importance in increasing our global awareness: I want to begin with this topic because I believe it is the most important lesson I have learned so far. Immediately after my first day of classes, The Global Consumer taught by Molly Rapert and International Marketing taught by Sarah Grace, I felt uneasy about my global awareness and cultural intelligence. In Global Consumers, we are learning about the history as well as contemporary issues in places such as China, Africa, and the European Union. Although some of these discussions may be difficult and heart-wrenching, I believe it is important for us to learn from them. In my International Marketing class we have learned about Cultural Intelligence and the importance of enhancing our CQ. Americans have often been seen as ignorant of other countries and cultures. In this technologically advanced and well-connected world, it is crucial for us to become more informed and aware on a global scale.?
  2. Unlimited room for personal growth: This week has shown me numerous personal and practical benefits of studying abroad. It has pushed me to challenge myself and forced me to step outside my comfort zone, whether this be through meeting new people, trying unfamiliar foods, or navigating a foreign country. Additionally, I have gained practical life skills in areas such as financial and time management and travel planning.?
  3. Learning to “trust the process”: I usually tend to think logically and plan for the future. However, this week has taught me that it is okay to not know what comes next. Some of the best moments have came from making decisions spontaneously. Not everything will go just as planned, so it is important to be flexible and learn how to adjust when unexpected situations arise.??
  4. Appreciation for other cultures: I believe it is important not just to learn about other cultures, but to fully immerse ourselves in them so that we can truly appreciate their diversity. I have taken the time to engage with locals, try local foods, explore art, and even embarrass myself while attempting to speak the language! By actively participating in this new environment, I have already broadened my perspective and deepened my respect for other cultures in just one week.?
  5. Spending time wisely: Before this week, I often spent time taking naps or scrolling on my phone in my free time. However, this week has shown me how much there is to see and learn, leaving no time to waste. The first week flew by, leaving only three more left. Instead of idling, I have learned that I should spend my spare time to explore, meet new people, go on walks, or even go to get gelato! I have also improved my time management skills. With a heavy workload, I have had to learn how to balance schoolwork and travel, ensuring I can fully enjoy everything Europe has to offer during my time here.

This has been a remarkable experience so far, I look forward to learning, exploring, and making new memories in these next three weeks CIMBA. Ciao!

I love this quote Gracie Jay: "?Some of the best moments have came from making decisions spontaneously." But most of all, I love your final takeaway - the value of living presently in these small moments. I am so delighted you are in my class!
