Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland
Protecting and improving the environment as a valuable asset for the people of Ireland.
What is Ireland doing to adapt to the impacts of climate change? A new report by the EPA outlines just that.?
As climate change impacts intensify, Ireland needs to be resilient to ongoing and future impacts. Ireland is making progress towards building resilience through coordinated efforts across policy, planning, data, and research. This report, Focus on Adaptation, provides a summary of recent adaptation developments in Ireland following on from the EPA’s State of the Environment report 2024, which states that we now need to speed up the implementation of climate adaptation measures; especially cross-sectoral and integrated adaptation actions that can deliver multiple benefits. ?
Key Developments:?
??Policy & Governance: The 2024 National Adaptation Framework prioritises social justice, equity, and integrated planning, requiring more sectors to produce adaptation plans and robust monitoring.?
??Data & Evidence: Standardised projections of Ireland’s future climate and the national adaptation platform Climate Ireland, provide consistent information and enhance planning and knowledge capacity. In 2025, the publication of Ireland’s first National Climate Risk Register will identify and prioritise urgent risks such as flooding and drought impacts.?
???Planning: Local Authority Climate Action Plans (2024) and new sectoral adaptation plans due in 2025.?
??Finance: New funding, including the Future Ireland Fund, alongside expanded climate-related expenditure tracking, support strategic investments.?
??Research: Nearly €317M was invested in climate and climate-related research in Ireland (2020–2023), providing new data and evidence to address key knowledge gaps.?
From local action plans to national frameworks, Ireland’s approach emphasises collaboration, robust data, and community engagement to address climate vulnerabilities and build a sustainable future.??
