What IoT means to me

What IoT means to me

The growth of sensorizing everything has a potential positive outcome. The effort must be a long-term, never ending business improvement process, not the latest IT fad.

But…to go with that sensorizing, the analytics of data must also keep up, and with it the transfer of the data and the communication of conclusions derived from the data as well, presuming those capture, archive and analysis processes and data sites exist.

Recalling the early days of my career, mentored by a Master Mechanic, wandering the mill, purposely looking for trouble, ‘condition monitoring’ if you will in its most basic form.

Then, upon discovering a potential problem, quickly returning to the maintenance office to rummage through paper files to get background information on that critical piece of equipment to piece, perhaps questioning operators and mechanics, to formulate a logical scenario for an immediate solution to minimize disruption or stress.

What does the data tell you? What is the equipment saying to you?

This now leads to the current development of tools for that discovery, analytical exercise.

Yes, of course, the sensors, data collectors, transmitters and database to collect, research, analyze, communicate and presentation of the data must be present.

Now that sensing, collection, analysis and presentation is being done remotely enables another huge advancement. Concentrating SME resources, which do not get reassigned to other ‘more urgent’ tasks, maximizing productivity.

But, imagine the wandering ‘condition’ monitor today with a head mounted viewing and communication device with real time access to that equipment’s history, its current condition and an analytically derived ‘potential’, foreseeable ‘condition’ problem? With full access to the business process software in use at the site. Providing the user with transaction capabilities.

We can replace technology that replaces earlier technologies for the sensing, collect, transmission and archiving of data and information and speed up the process, and we can provide access to the transactional database, but….

Building algorithms that emulate the subject matter expert’s analytical skills, e.g., critical thinking, is the real key to the future of asset care.

The question, then, is this.

Who are these firms that have developed technologies that can determine what is failing, why it is failing and recommend a short-term solution?

Who are these people, these firms that have developed technologies that can determine what is failing, why it is failing and recommend a short-term solution, while guiding the management to longer-term extensions of an asset’s life cycle?

Do they exist? Or, is it all hype.

Are we there yet?

No, not yet.? But there is a glimmer at the end of that tunnel.

Whether the technology is there yet, the process thinking demonstrated by the floor supervisor is spot on. This process does have a name which is Defect Elimination. The sensors do provide early (earlier) warning, and, artificial intelligence may say how to fix it, and, the staff may become very fast at repairing this asset. But why did this failure occur in the first place? If the true cause is not identified then the maintenance staff may be back at this asset 6 months from now.

Thank you for article! Agree with you and I have the same questions.

I have been there (front line CM) and wondered if we would ever see the day where the front line ‘human’ factor could be scaled. The answer to your question is ‘Yes’ it is here and now if you have the time to get through the Hype. It took me a lot of probing and questioning John until I came across Senseye for me they have the solution that can scale and support the all important front line Engineers. These will be great tools that can scale our Condition Monitoring efforts. I think we are nearly there John thanks for your article ??
