What is the Intersectionality of the Environment, DE&I, Fighting Hatred, and Maybe Even World Peace?

What is the Intersectionality of the Environment, DE&I, Fighting Hatred, and Maybe Even World Peace?

KNEE JERK ALERT…this is not a religious post or rant…to the contrary, it’s merely a reflection on applying some big learning to the state (sometimes sad) of our world today.

Sunday night, September 25 (tonight as I write this) marks the first night of Rosh HaShanah…often and wrongly translated as the Jewish New Year. While it is a two-night and two-day holiday of introspection, prayer, and food (what holiday isn’t in some way or another…even fasts end with food), it is also a day of great global reflection…let me elucidate.

Rosh HaShanah literally means the “Head of the Year.” And here’s the thing…according to tradition, it commemorates the Creation of the World as described in Genesis.?

To read the text, you don’t have to follow any specific religion or belief. According to studies, some 97% of the world has access to the text, often in their own language…81% according to a study.?

Back to Genesis and creation. No need for a Knee Jerk Alert here…I’m under a blanket ruling here…this isn’t about creationism.

Why is the text important? And why do I think it can guide us to better behavior?

Let’s start with the environment. How could you not have respect for nature and the natural order when you follow the metaphorical (according to many) days of creation??

Darwin aside, it follows a pretty simple evolutionary pattern. Each day builds on the next. The interaction and interdependency of each new addition are “good” and lead to the next…culminating with the “creation” of humankind who are wholly dependent on the totality of what came before.?

How humbling that should be to us. It’s not about religion…see The Lorax…it’s about understanding the need for our planet and our world to work in concert…see Avatar. A day or two dedicated to the creation of the world should cause us all to take a step back and rethink how we look at and honor the planet that gives us life.?

Yet, it's not just about Environment and Ecology…tough subjects for some. I took it up a notch and went for DE&I, fighting hatred and even—wanna-be hippy that I am—world peace.?

Just keep reading. Get to the creation of our species. No religions are mentioned; no color of skin or ethnicity; no cultural affiliations—nothing. The text is actually quite moving, I recommend reading it…Genesis 1:27.

“God created humankind in his image, in the image of God; male and female God created them.”

The text then goes on to make clear how the world supports this new creation.?

Notice the THEM…wild…no…and we argue over pronouns.?

Again, the key is according to this text: “No one is better than the rest.”

So dear readers, thank you for all your great comments and support. For making discussion lively and thoughtful. For honoring the KNEE JERK ALERTS. And for inspiring me to write more.?

As is traditional, I will end with the simple greeting we use as a sign-off…May you be inspired to have a Sweet Year…keep that thought and who knows what we might accomplish together.

What’s your view??

Agree that a day or two dedicated to the creation?of the world should cause us to contemplate the drivers that?lead us to go against our sense of values by performing activities wreaking?large-scale depletion of natural?resources?and damaging our planet even as its multitudinous elements continue to remain alive within us as the very life in us.

My view is your posts always make me think so thank you David Sable. I am a believer we are all “children of God” so Genesis 1:27 hits close to home. As I work to respect and be more patient with my fellow man, it is hard to not do so when I take the time to realize all those around me are children of God every bit as much as I am. That is the ultimate E in the DEI equation. Buying into that premise, the D and I come pretty easily. Thanks for your thoughtful post.

EVERYONE should read the bible and most certainly Genesis---as you would say "knee jerk alert!" Something so simple really, if you don't take the offensive route which is not too hard to avoid if you're being rational. I'll end with my favorite, repeated Hebrew word in the beginning of Genesis--Nephesh!
