What is the Internet of Things or IoT? Definition and examples

The Internet of Things (IoT) concept may seem a bit confusing and need some clarification. Below, we break IoT down to provide a better understanding of what lies behind the idea of and powers IoT.??

What defines the Internet of Things??

The "things" of the Internet of Things are devices (i.e., the "tools"), such as smartphones and computers, that are programmed and used to independently connect to the Internet, sans humans, and allows interaction between devices —a network, if you will. ?

When was the Internet of Things invented??

The invention of communication between machines—the first IoTs—dates back to the 1800s in the form of radio communications, and the innovations continued throughout the 1900s. However, the first key IoT concept breakthrough happened in 1989 with a Coca-Cola vending machine that transferred information, via an earlier version of the Internet, about whether the drink was in stock in the machine. Although it was a breakthrough, the technology wasn't quite advanced enough to attain the full IoT status we know of today. In 1999, the turning point for IoT occurred at the International Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where scientists discussed the automation concept of intelligent devices and processes. Later that year, Kevin Ashton gave this technological concept a name, the "Internet of Things."???

How does it work??

Devices included in the net are connected to the Internet through gateways that process the received information and transfer it to the cloud. Then back-end servers analyze the data and extract the information required to find a solution. ?

What are some basic examples of the Internet of Things???

Until recently, access to the Internet was available only through devices such as smartphones, personal computers, and tablets. But now, with the application of the IoT concept, Internet access is available on almost every possible, thinkable device. Here are the most typical examples:?

Smart Home?

Smart Home—the most famous example. You can connect countless items (lights, entertainment systems, heating) and appliances (ovens, dishwashers, refrigerator/freezers) to an app on your phone and build an entire daily routine for your household using IoT devices, increasing energy efficiency and improving convenience.??

Smart Cities??

Garbage cans or vehicles with sensing sensors, transport routes based on peoples' movement around the city, video surveillance, noise and pollution sensors—examples of IoT concept applications that create safer cities and improve quality of life around communities.?

Smart Healthcare??

Smartwatches, biosensors, smart shoes, rings—medical IoT devices can be used to prevent severe complications and save lives. IoT system devices can remotely monitor patients' health, remind people to check their glucose levels, alert physicians remotely regarding a patient having a health issue, and so on.?

How has the Internet of Things impacted business??

IoT has become beneficial for any industry that requires automation, remote monitoring, or data collection for detailed analysis— transportation, retail, agriculture, construction, health care, logistics. It simplifies and automates processes, analyzes vast amounts of data, and as a result, improves business-to-consumer (B2C), business-to-business (B2B), and even machine-to-machine (M2M) relationships. In short, IoT's impact on businesses worldwide is immeasurable.?
