What Is Internet of Things?

In the broadest sense, the term IoT encompasses everything connected to the internet, but it is increasingly being used to define objects that "talk" to each other. 

"Simply, the Internet of Things is made up of devices – from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables – connected together," Matthew Evans, the IoT programme head at techUK, says.

IoT offers us opportunity to be more efficient in how we do things, saving us time, money and often emissions in the process. It allows companies, governments and public authorities to re-think how they deliver services and produce goods.

How does IoT affect remote work?

I believe IoT gives businesses the opportunity to remotely monitor and operate, while saving associated operational expenses. For example, remote IoT applications allow technicians to monitor and maintain the performance of equipment without requiring staff present at the location. IoT sensors that are connected to cloud software platforms can remotely report on things such as condition, usage, and even temperature of machines, providing real-time data to the responsible person.

In healthcare, IoT devices are helping workers to remotely monitor the vital aspects of patients in hospital or at home, allowing them to act as virtual caregivers and make recommendations and diagnoses based on the data they receive.

IoT devices such as sensors and cameras help security teams work remotely to detect unwanted intruders and understand which employees have had access to certain parts of a building. 

In fuel stations, IoT devices are helping operators to remotely monitor pumps, tanks & customer data to ensure control and revenue assurance.

The importance of IoT in our society is increasingly relevant and will shape how businesses operate in the near future.
