This question was posed to me recently and is quite difficult to answer as my interests and influences are so varied.
I think I am most inspired by three qualities:
1. Great minds,
2. Selfless attitudes and the
3. Foresight, of those who have left a lasting legacy.
I watched a documentary about great engineering triumphs and was impressed by how Dutch engineers reclaimed the Ocean to build Amsterdam and built Utrecht from a humble port. It was probably why Sir Cornelius Vermuyden a Dutch engineer who specialised in Land Reclaimation was commissioned by the crown for Charles I in 1626.
I was also inspired by Nelson Mandela who had the vision of a united South Africa and wanted to celebrate the differences of a rainbow nation eradicate the inequality of opportunity. Translating his vision into a reality took great personal sacrifice and fortidude
Malala Yousafzai inspired me also as she turned a negative personal situation to positive story to inspire young children to the right of all children to education. Despite being shot by the Taliban survived the tragedy and was the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace prize. She is now studying at Oxford.
I am inspired by Elon Musk CEO of Tesla sometimes to create a competitive advantage in business you have to turn right whilst everybody turns left. This differentiates leaders from followers and ensures you will be the ‘next big thing.’
I am inspired by the thoughts and theories of John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman. Economists are much derided for their forecast and predictions, but as someone who studied it for four years at university I can tell you that economists provide a framework of how markets work and are based on assumptions and market conditions if these fluctuate so does the outcomes.
I am inspired by the clever scientists at Stanford University who have pioneered and developed new Immunotherapy techniques to tackle Cancer at an early stage. This is now being trialled within the NHS and is seen as groundbreaking and innovative way of dealing with the complexities of Cancer.
I am inspired by Barack Obama’s first election triumph and the creativity he demonstrated in raising the funds for his presidential campaign. As anyone who follows American politics will know the candidate with the biggest campaign budget usually wins the race to the White House. What impressed me most was how noble he was in office and the great diplomacy he always showed.
Lastly I would like to mention my parents as an inspiration who instilled love, determination and optimism to me growing up so much so that my cup was overflowed with positivity and never half empty
What inspires YOU?
