What inspires BZ'ers to create joyfully compelling animation?

Here at Blue Zoo, our vision is to create joyfully compelling stories, which we’ve done by creating some of the most well-loved kids shows on TV such as ‘Numberblocks’, ‘Supertato’ and ‘The Adventures of Paddington’.?

To celebrate World Animation Day from over the weekend, we’re celebrating by sharing a handful of BZ'ers' inspirations behind creating the shows that kids love.?

Malachi James , Storyboard Artist

“For me, it's a combination of trying to recreate that wonderful feeling I got from watching animation as a boy and the desire to create the kind of stories that don't usually get told.”

'It's Pony'

Damon Winterburn , Animation Team Lead

“The thing that inspires me the most would be the small moments of joy in our lives, that we can all experience most days!

  • Going for a walk with family / friends
  • Drawing with my kids
  • A good hot chocolate
  • A nice hug from someone

The list could go on forever I'm sure.

Point is that we don't always need big, grand adventures to make us feel happy and fulfilled. The smaller moments are just as important.”

'The Adventures of Paddington'

Alex Pilalis , Senior Animator

“For me, I really enjoy bringing characters to life and eliciting emotions from people who experience my work. Creating something that lives beyond you is a way of being remembered. And if I can inspire even just one person to come up with an idea of their own or pursue their dreams, then my work has been successful.”

Amy Jones , Production Coordinator

“A lot of us grew up with really great TV as kids, which was clever, funny and tried to help kids be more compassionate and accepting. As an adult, on reflection some of those programmes really stuck with me. The idea that I help contribute to the next lot of children's television is lovely, and I hope we can continue the tradition of interesting, quality animation for the next generation.”

'Alphablocks'

John Valentine , Workflow / Production Coordinator?

"I find inspiration in the limitless possibilities of animation. The medium allows us to tell incredible stories that aren't bound by the constraints of live action. When I think about movies like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Ponyo, I'm reminded of the unique wonder and sense of adventure that animation can bring. It makes you feel like a child again, exploring unknown worlds and interacting with larger-than-life characters and places. Animation has the power to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, and it can take you on epic adventures. It's not just about the visuals; it's about the emotions it can evoke. Films like Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion can make you question the very essence of life, while shows like Ergo Proxy and Plastic Memories explore the depths of human existence. Toradora! can make you laugh and smile, and Your Lie in April can bring tears to your eyes. What truly inspires me is that anyone can create these stories through animation. Take, for example, Astartes on YouTube, a visually stunning animation made by one person. It demonstrates the power of animation to captivate and inspire, showing that the possibilities are limitless. Animation allows us to convey joy, wonder, and inspiration to the next generation.”

Will Lloyd-Cook , Series Director?

“Working with my team inspires me everyday. Seeing them putting in the hardwork and effort pushes me to want to do them proud. I find it's cyclical? where creativity pushes creativity and wanting to do better and better.”
