What is industrial automation?

How industries can use automation to innovate

Industrial automation is the process of automating production by using control systems, such as machines, actuators, sensors, processors, and networks, to carry out operations.

Simple conveyor belts carrying components through an assembly line marked the beginning of industrial automation. Basic duties and labour-saving chores were carried out by machines. Industrial automation today refers to a broad range of equipment, including machines, actuators, sensors, processors, and networks that link an industrial environment. The best approach to utilize technology is the main focus of modern industrial automation, which includes PLCs, AI, Machine Learning, and IIoT devices. The types of industrial automation, as well as their advantages, will be discussed in the sections that follow. Industrial automation is a driving force behind expanding markets and a global economy.

Disruption in the industrial sector is inevitable. It is controlled by closed, proprietary systems that put vendor lock-in ahead of innovation and are not flexible. Many automation suppliers appear to promote "open" technologies. Although many suppliers have yet to adopt vendor-agnostic systems, where software from one vendor can run on hardware from another, open automation, as it now stands, is not open enough. Industrial companies consequently incur needless engineering costs and experience delays in implementing innovation. Reduced adaptability and missed business opportunities are the results.

The cost of inertia

We are stifling innovation and crippling productivity from "teamwork" between systems, computers, and people by continuing to use technology that is designed on closed, proprietary platforms. We cannot continue to accept inefficiently large engineering efforts, a lack of modularization, or other obstacles to innovation and resilience.

In the current paradigm, closed and proprietary systems continue to constrain industrial organizations and workforces, impeding the highest priority areas, including innovation, efficiency, sustainability, and agility. Our sector is now just partially optimized, supported by a faltering global economy.

"Crossroads for the industry"

We've come to a turning point. The Fourth Industrial Revolution holds great promise, but we must fundamentally alter our technological paradigm to fully realize it. The current industrial automation system design has done an excellent job of pushing the industry to where we are now.

There is hope for a different future. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), according to Accenture, has the potential to boost global manufacturing productivity and efficiency by trillions of dollars by 2030. According to a World Economic Forum survey produced in partnership with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), 72% of manufacturers view sophisticated analytics as becoming more and more crucial, and 80% think that digitalization and data-driven insight may enhance efficiency.?

Universal automation?

The benefits of open-operating platforms have already been accepted by the IT world; now it's time for the industry. The field of universal automation consists of "plug and produce" automation software components that successfully address particular client issues.

Consider it the beginning of an app store for industrial automation. The necessary technology is currently available. Similar to how the Linux open-source operating system helped unify operating systems across computers, the IEC 61499 standard for interoperability and portability can be used to develop a common automation layer among companies.

Universal automation eliminates technological obstacles, enabling engineers to instantly reprogram production lines and industrial processes as necessary, even from a distance. To respond to altering consumer demand patterns and pandemic-related constraints, there is a need for increased agility and productivity.

Future change is conceivable. We can achieve intelligent automated operations with universal automation, enabling self-configuring and self-healing production lines.
