Imposter syndrome is the feeling that, despite external success, you're not truly qualified for your role. Many leaders, despite their accomplishments, struggle with this constant self-doubt, fearing that they’ll be “found out” as a fraud. It's more common than you think—even CEOs and top executives experience it.
Why Do Leaders Experience Imposter Syndrome?
High Expectations: Leaders often place immense pressure on themselves to succeed, leading them to feel they’re never doing enough.
Comparing Yourself to Others: When leaders compare their journey to others, they tend to overlook their own strengths and focus on perceived shortcomings.
Perfectionism: Many leaders strive for perfection, setting unattainable standards. When they can’t meet these, they feel like they’re failing.
Past Conditioning: Sometimes, past experiences of criticism or a lack of validation create a long-lasting belief that they’re not good enough, no matter what they achieve (in this case, therapy is the easiest way to overcome this)
How Can Imposter Syndrome Impact Leaders?
Imposter syndrome affects leadership in subtle yet damaging ways. Leaders may avoid taking risks, downplay their achievements, or shy away from new opportunities. It can also lead to burnout, as they work harder and harder to “prove” their worth, never feeling satisfied.
How Can Leaders Address Imposter Syndrome?
Acknowledge and Normalise It
First, understand that imposter syndrome is a common feeling, even among highly successful leaders. Simply acknowledging it can reduce its power.

Shift Your Focus
Instead of fixating on what you think you lack, focus on the value you bring to the table.?
Stop Comparing Yourself
Everyone’s leadership journey is different. Instead of comparing your progress to others, reflect on how far you’ve come and how much you’ve learned.
Practice Self-Compassion
Recognise that it’s okay to make mistakes and that perfection is an unrealistic and unattainable goal, remember what is perfect for you is not perfect for others. So it is a constantly moving line.... Learning from failures is what makes great leaders.
