Implicit bias is a type of bias that is not consciously held. It is formed through our experiences and interactions with the world, and it can be difficult to identify and change. Implicit bias can affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and it can have a significant impact on our lives.

Examples of Implicit Bias

There are many different examples of implicit bias. Some common examples include:

  • Association bias:?This is the tendency to associate certain characteristics with certain groups of people. For example, you might associate certain jobs with certain genders, such as nursing with women and construction with men.
  • Confirmation bias:?This is the tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs, and to ignore information that contradicts them. For example, you might be more likely to trust people who look like you or who come from a similar background.
  • Stereotype threat:?This is the anxiety that people feel when they are aware of a negative stereotype about their group. For example, a woman might feel a stereotype threat if she is the only woman in a meeting of men.

How Implicit Bias Can Affect Our Lives

Implicit bias can have a significant impact on our lives. It can affect our hiring decisions, our interactions with our colleagues, and even our friendships. For example, a study by the University of Chicago found that people with implicit racial bias were more likely to rate black job applicants as less competent than white job applicants.

How to Address Implicit Bias

There are a number of things that we can do to address implicit bias. Some of these things include:

  • Become aware of your own biases:?The first step to addressing implicit bias is to become aware of your own biases. You can do this by taking an implicit bias test or by reflecting on your own experiences and beliefs.
  • Challenge your biases:?Once you are aware of your biases, you can start to challenge them. This can be done by exposing yourself to different viewpoints, practicing mindfulness, and by being open to feedback from others.
  • Create a more inclusive environment:?We can also address implicit bias by creating a more inclusive environment. This means creating a workplace where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background or identity.

Implicit bias is a real issue, but it is an issue that we can address. By becoming aware of our own biases and by taking steps to address them, we can start to create a more inclusive workplace.

Just like our shadow follows us everywhere, implicit bias can affect how we treat people no matter where we are.

Ankita Mehra. Challenging implicit bias is an ongoing process. Just as shadows shift with the position of the sun, our biases may evolve and change over time. It requires continuous self-awareness.
