What Impact will the new UK Plastic Packaging Tax have on Recycling?

As we all know, the tax aims to encourage the use of recycled rather than new plastic within plastic packaging. It is hoped that this will, in turn, stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, thus diverting it away from Landfill.

Whether we are for it, or against it, the rate of tax will be ￡200/tonne on plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic, and which is manufactured or imported into the UK (including packaging on finished goods which are imported) it's hoped this will incentivise the use of recycled material in the production of plastic packaging.

Many experts are saying that this is a poorly thought out knee jerk reaction to activists, but it certainly seems like a wave that's going to cause a Tsunami.
