What are the implications of the “ChatGPT4 / Generative AI Arms Race” on Healthcare and Humanity at large?

Context:

Let’s face it – Microsoft’s introduction of the ChatGPT (generative AI) enabled Bing search engine as well as the ChatGPT embedded co-pilot in all Microsoft Office products is a game changer and a ‘paradigm shift’ that will have far-reaching implications for how we live, but more importantly, how folks in the real-world like us add value and earn a living every day of every week of every month.

Make no mistake, generative AI to automate authoring documents, emails, social media posts and long form blogposts, data sheets, excel spreadsheets, power point presentations, research, and responses to examinations is indeed unprecedented change and terrifying for many!

Turns out that while generative AI will render 85 MM jobs redundant by 2023, it will also generate 97 MM new jobs in big data analytics, data science to information security, digital marketing, medical diagnosis and physician productivity, according to the World Economic Forum that concluded in October 2020.

Given that the world of AI is beginning to resemble “the Wild West” with “an arm’s race” within and between Nations, who is the ‘Sheriff with oversight” on the implications, good, bad and ugly?

A "Generative AI Arms Race" has been unleashed within and between Nations! What are its implications for Healthcare and Humanity at large?

What is amply evident given recent announcements from Microsoft, Google, SalesForce, Amazon et al is that “an arms race has been unleashed” within and between nations (USA, China, Russia, Israel and India) to embed Generative AI into enterprise software solutions, as well as a plethora of new solutions being brought to market.

Here are my questions and concerns as a Healthcare Visionary:

1.??Given that the world of AI is beginning to resemble “the Wild West” and “an arm’s race”, who is the ‘Sheriff with oversight” on the implications, good, bad and ugly?

2.??AI Ethics’ is still nascent and far from mature – can the vendors engaged in the arms race be trusted to self-govern and address ethical issues with life impacting implications in Healthcare, Life Sciences, Automotive and other industries?

3. How will ChatGPT4/Generative AI impact marketing, education, legal, retail, automotive and manufacturing?

4. Who is discussing the downside of AI and its impact and implications, especially in the hands of ‘bad actors’ with malafide intentions? What are the implications for society when when fake news embedded with deep fake images and videos proliferate? Do we need monitoring with another set of AI applications that filters out the fakes and validates the "Truth"? Who will own and run this for us??

5.??Where will Generative AI find “meaningful use in healthcare”?

Here are some logical and intuitive use cases per my experience thus far - not exhaustive by any stretch of the imagination:

  • Creating an ‘early warning system’ for Epidemics and Pandemics given our cataclysmic experience and learnings from the recent COVID-19 Pandemic
  • Making sense of unstructured physician’s notes at the patient bedside for nurses?
  • Scan DICOM images and prioritize the patients most at risk for cardiologists or oncologist without significant manual intervention from radiologists?
  • Monitoring patients with chronic diseases in their homes with non-invasive AI enabled hardware+?software+?services monitoring?
  • Predictive analytics for Population Risk Stratification and ED Scheduling to minimize ‘ED crowding’?
  • Proactively identify patients at risk for closure of care gaps to minimize LOS violations and 30-60-90 day re-admissions?

#HIMSS23 Conversation on these implications and their Impact on the Healthcare Industry

I had the opportunity to discuss some of these relevant topics with our Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) David Schweppe , with whom I share a passion for the convergence of AI and Analytics that is underway in front of our eyes.

We also discussed how MedeAnalytics is addressing these with our Augmented Analytics capabilities led by David Schweppe and his Data Science team

Please check out this 6.5 minute interview/discussion on video (YouTube video above) and let us know your thoughts and feedback. Thanks in advance and have an awesome week ahead!
