What If…I am dead?

Confronting one’s mortality is never easy.

Preparing a Will acknowledges that. It took me hours of self-reflection, multitude of thoughts and ultimately the realisation that despite my reservations, preparing a Will is the most responsible step to take. ?

Like tax, Korean dramas, and the Kardashians, death is inevitable.

Some might view it as a pantang (aka taboo). But then statistics would show that everyone who made a Will died immediately. I of course stand corrected and would kick myself if I die tomorrow. ?

Preparing a Will is not difficult. One needs to identify the assets to be bequeathed, the beneficiary / beneficiaries, the executor (male) / executrix (female) and the Will is to be witnessed by 2 or more people.

Certainly having a lawyer drafting it would be easier but it’s not a must or a requirement.

Personally having drafted my Will, I reached the following realisation:-

(a)??????????????I am “forced” to have my affairs (e.g. to list all assets) in order;

(b)?????????????I have to evaluate and shortlist my potential executors / executrixes. Thereafter to make calls to them to have the awkward conversation about post my death; and

(c)??????????????To determine the beneficiary or beneficiaries. ?

Whilst the above is serious and morbid, the fun part is that I am at full liberty to add extravagant wishes during my funeral. Hypothetically such as having a particular playlist (think 80’s music and Taylor Swift’s songs) played, fake rain and black umbrellas, an extensive eulogy about how I was a secret agent superhero and that there is a secret map to the fountain of youth.

Bottom line and in all seriousness, whilst your loved ones will mourn and grieve for you, a Will would serve as that last message to them. A message to ease the transition and to give effect to your wishes.

Death in itself is difficult. Let’s not make it any more difficult for our loved ones. Unlike Taylor Swift’s hit, one can’t simply Shake It Off.?
