What I Wish The UN Understood
United Nations Day, marking the 77th anniversary of the UN charter was celebrated a couple of weeks ago. This is what it says on the event page:
"There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. No other global organization gives hope to so many people for a better world and can deliver the future we want. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater. UN Day, celebrated every year, offers the opportunity to amplify our?common agenda?and reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Charter that have guided us for the past 77 years."
In a statement by Secretary-General António Guterres:
“The global health, social, economic and human rights crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation – and tested it to the limit”,
My Commentary
Yes the UN is being tested, and falling short. A lot of fancy events and reports, and still millions of people suffering and living without basic necessities such as food, shelter and water - not to mention security.
I don't see this organization bringing countries together or giving anyone hope except the people who fund them.
Now is the time for the UN to deliver on the charter it took on so many decades ago. I don't see this organization bringing countries together or giving anyone hope except the people who fund them. Hate to burst everyone's bubble but I simply don't see this massive global organization really helping anyone or giving hope. All it knows how to do regarding major challenges such as the climate - is to collect funding. So how can we even know what's true anymore when everything is bought and paid for? Even in institutions that are supposed to be neutral.

It's time to admit that we have a serious problem that can no longer be ignored. The world around us is operating according to one set of principles, while we insist on operating according to a different set of principles that collide with the world.
It's time to admit that we have a serious problem that can no longer be ignored. The world around us is operating according to one set of principles, while we insist on operating according to a different set of principles that collide with the world. So everything is becoming less secure and welcoming to say the least. The air, ground and water are becoming toxic, the climate is becoming extreme, animals are dying, crops drying up, and people are being more violent and hateful toward each other.
As the world keeps moving in its own direction, our reality will become increasingly entangled; the systems that sustain our lives, and the societies we live in. Even our bodies, are highly complex systems whose complexity increases over time in the process of evolution. This process is irreversible, just as we can't turn back the clock from being humans back to being unicellular creatures.
The only way to keep us on a sustainable path is we stop seeking isolation from others, and start consciously investing in human connection.
The only way to keep us on a sustainable path is we stop seeking isolation from others, and start consciously investing in human connection. When we truly connect we'll no longer feel all these things as unpleasant. We'll see how they help shape us and prevent us from going up against one another.
It will be impossible to “Give peace a chance” and “safeguard our planet,” as per the Secretary General's speech, without starting a worldwide campaign to foster solidarity among all nations. Since our problems are global, the solutions also need to be global.
What am I always saying? Are we just going to sit around and wait to see what happens next? Just let nature take its course? The more we insist on serving our narcissistic selves, while nature continues in its holistic trajectory, we'll suffer the consequences. The current wars and climate crises are sort of a prelude of things to come. This is our wake up call.
We need to begin the change immediately. and understand that the only way to make life on Earth safe and pleasant is by living according to nature's principles which are all about inclusion, diversity and equality. As long as we refuse to follow the simple example from nature of how parts of a network should behave, many will continue to suffer. Not the people working at the UN of course, but all the people they're supposedly giving hope to.
