What I think about counter offers ??

I recently experienced a counteroffer.??
Let me explain….??
We had been speaking with a candidate off and on for around 12 months. They were unhappy in their position, long hours, late nights in the office, little reward or recognition, putting up with a real boys club.?
BUT change is hard and they couldn’t quite make up their mind about leaving, and we would hear every so often and offer advice and support.??
After one incident too many, they made up their mind – yes, they wanted to leave, they couldn’t take anymore and needed to get out for personal and professional reasons. An offer was made to them that met their requirements and expectations, they accepted…they handed in their notice.?
They then accepted a counteroffer.??
Candidates… When not to accept.?
Money isn’t everything, your mental health and confidence should never be compromised for a few extra pounds, its not worth it in the short term and will have long term repercussions that affect your personal life and future career.?

Personally, I find counteroffers to be insulting in some circumstances. If your new job offer includes a higher salary and better rewards, and your current employer matches or exceeds this….why wasn’t it offered before? They got away with not paying you what you are worth.??
When to accept or avoid the situation altogether…?
If there is a reason you are looking elsewhere, identify what the reason is and see if you can proactively overcome this with your current employer.?
If its around training. progression, or lack of, salary or benefits. I always feel that open and honest conversations go a long way. It could be worth presenting some ideas yourself with data, evidence and research to quantify.?
Employers – are you doing all you can to prevent having to make a counteroffer??
You know where we are if you need us.?
