What I stopped doing and What I started doing after my cancer diagnosis !!

A year ago I got a diagnosis I never imagined I would get. I have moved forward and past that day with so much learning and discovery.

As a breast cancer thriver, I’ve had to rethink many aspects of my lifestyle to prioritize my health and reduce the risk of recurrence. I keep learning and love there that is so much hope for everyone who chooses to learn.

Today, I want to share a few habits I’ve left behind and the new ones I’ve embraced. It’s not just about avoiding certain things but adding actions that help me thrive.

What I Don’t Do Anymore:

  1. Drink Alcohol There’s a strong link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of breast cancer. I’ve chosen to cut it out completely. Studies show that even moderate drinking can raise the likelihood of cancer recurrence. Instead, I opt for hydrating mocktails and herbal teas. You will find so many restaurants with cool mocktail sections now.
  2. Eat Processed Meats Processed meats, like bacon and sausage, contain nitrates and preservatives that are linked to cancer. I’ve swapped these out for more plant-based and lean protein options like beans, fish, and tofu, which nourish the body without the risks.
  3. Stress Over Everything Stress has a profound impact on our immune system and overall health.I know this played a BIG part in the development of my cancer. While I can’t eliminate stress completely, I’ve learned to manage it better. Chronic stress can create inflammation, which contributes to cancer growth. Now, I focus on what I can control and let go of the rest.
  4. Consume Too Much Sugar High sugar intake fuels inflammation and spikes insulin, both of which are linked to cancer growth. I avoid sugary snacks and instead choose natural, whole foods to keep my energy steady and my body in balance. I've found some great healthier treats so send me a DM and I'll send you a copy of my sweet treats !!!

What I Do Now:

  1. Abundance of Veggies Vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that help combat free radicals and support the immune system. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts are especially powerful. They’re now a cornerstone of my meals, helping my body fight off disease naturally. I feel SO much better when I eat more veggies.
  2. Walk More Movement is medicine! Walking daily not only supports heart health but also boosts the immune system and reduces cancer risks. I’ve made it a habit to walk outside, which allows me to combine exercise with the added benefits of fresh air and nature. I grab my dog and walk. I've even started inviting other women to join me.
  3. Connect with Others Building and maintaining social connections has been a lifeline. Studies show that people with strong social bonds have better outcomes after a cancer diagnosis. Whether it’s through close friendships, support groups, or community events, staying connected has helped me stay resilient. My dance community is such a great part of my life, a place for connection and fun.
  4. Breathe and Let Go Deep breathing exercises and mindfulness have become daily practices for me. They reduce stress hormones and help me stay centered. Letting go of things I can’t control has brought peace and significantly reduced my anxiety about the future.
  5. Journal More Journaling has been a powerful tool for emotional release and clarity. Writing down my thoughts and feelings allows me to process emotions in a healthy way. It’s been proven that expressive writing can improve mental health, which is so important in long-term recovery. Need a journal to start with ? Check out my Journey to JOY journal here.

By sharing these changes, I hope to inspire others to make small but impactful adjustments in their own lives.

It’s about more than just avoiding risks—it’s about embracing a lifestyle that nurtures and protects your body.
