What I Read in 2023

In my December enews, I shared a list of books I read in 2023--some for professional or personal development, and others just for fun. Here are four that I highlighted. (To get the full list, you'll have to go to my website karengrahamconsulting.com and subscribe.)

How Women Rise

A key concept I learned from this book is that the behaviors and attributes that help women advance in the first half of their career can sometimes hold them back once they reach a senior leadership position. As I started my executive coaching practice, I began noticing this everywhere.

Klara and the Sun

Written from the perspective of a robotic companion, this novel raises some interesting questions about the role of artificial intelligence. I found the character both charming and horrifying–not unlike my attitude toward ChatGPT.

Grey Bees

This is a fictional account of a beekeeper in Ukraine, before the current war, but in a recent period of Russian occupation. I’ve found that reading helps me more vividly imagine the experiences of others, helps me see a group as distinct individuals, and builds empathy.

What I Mean When I Say I’m Autistic

Written by someone who is autistic, this book emphasizes the advantages of being on the spectrum and provides a straightforward description of what it’s like for one individual.

High fives to the Washburn branch of the Hennepin County Library, my favorite local book store Magers & Quinn, and Bookshop.org for keeping me well supplied.

Now it's your turn. What did you read this year? What should be on my must read list for 2024?
