What the @$#% Was I Meant To Do?

For many of us, our sense of purpose was once intertwined with our religious beliefs. We were identified as being "called" to serve, and while I admired those who found and embraced this calling, I never experienced that particular revelation myself. However, life has a way of steering us in unexpected directions.

After a life-impacting experience that changed the course of my journey, I found myself compelled to share motivational sessions with others. In my world, I encountered numerous individuals facing retirement, and I was determined to push them (perhaps with a friendly kick) not to "retire" but to discover new avenues in their post-career lives.

Hence, I created a session called "How to be an IT Survivor," aiming to inspire audiences to ponder how they could make a meaningful difference in the world. I encouraged them to "find their passion and follow it." To my surprise, one group approached me afterward, confessing that they were unsure of their "passion." They requested a session specifically focused on "Finding Your Passion" and eagerly invited me to present it at their next event. I accepted the challenge, and it turned out to be a resounding success!

Curiously, at the time, I hadn't fully grasped why I had chosen the term "passion." It had a dual meaning in this context: a strong liking or desire for something, and at the same time, signifying one's purpose or calling. Reflecting on this, I came to realize that the quest for "finding your passion" had been an enduring theme throughout my life, whether directly or indirectly. Now, here I was, encouraging others to do the same.

As I connected with diverse audiences over the years, I discovered that the definitions of passion, purpose, and calling varied significantly depending on cultural upbringing, religious or non-religious background, and life choices already made. This led me to a decision - I wanted to strip away the religious and spiritual connotations and even secular references, believing that people from all walks of life and beliefs seek something that brings true meaning to their existence. I dubbed this quest the pursuit of their MaD thing - that powerful endeavor that would enable them to Make a Difference.

Thus, I decided to boldly name my session "What The F*ck Was I Meant To Do?". The title might raise eyebrows and provoke some, but it also intrigues and captivates those who realize it's not about foul language, but rather about unearthing their true "passion, purpose, calling." The responses have been nothing short of amazing.

It's true; the title may offend those with extreme sensitivities. But it also serves as a powerful litmus test - if someone is put off by the title, their openness and willingness to grow and evolve might be limited. And you know what? They are not my audience.

So, if you're still reading, ask yourself this: Are you on a quest for something more? Are you seeking that MaD thing that will empower you to change the world within your sphere of influence? If so, I invite you to join me in one of my sessions. Embrace the challenge, let go of preconceived notions, and take that step towards discovering what the f*ck you were truly meant to do.

Learn more and take the first step towards your MaD thing here. I look forward to seeing you there!

As I approach retirement, I am finding more and more that what I was meant to do is to take a nap!

I like the "MaD thing" idea. I was that weird kid in high school more interested in making a difference in the world than in high school happenings.
