What Was I Made For? Reflecting on Leadership and Responsibility

The other day, I was working, lost in a sea of tasks, with a random mix playing through my headphones. Suddenly, a song from the Barbie movie started playing, and halfway through, I stopped working.

The words of Billie Eilish’s "What Was I Made For?" resonated deeply with me. I teared up a little in a few spots.

This song, intended for a film, made me think of the leaders I see every day.

On social media, in person, during phone calls, and on Zoom meetings—leaders are everywhere. Many have been leading long before they were officially labeled as leaders, bosses, or managers. Yet, I see the worry in their eyes—the fear of being an imposter.

I go through this all the time myself, and I wanted to share this song from a different perspective, reflecting on the leaders I encounter in my life.

A Moment of Vulnerability

In "What Was I Made For?", Billie Eilish sings, "I used to float, now I just fall down. I used to know, but I'm not sure now." These lines hit me hard.

They perfectly capture the moments when we, as leaders, feel lost and burdened. It's okay to feel this way.

Leadership is not just about strength; it's about recognizing and embracing our vulnerabilities.

Embracing Our Humanity

The song speaks to the very core of what it means to be human. Admitting we don’t have all the answers doesn’t make us weak; it makes us real. It fosters an environment of trust and openness.

When we, as leaders, show our human side, it encourages others to do the same. It builds a culture where it's okay to be uncertain and to seek support.

Reflecting on Our Purpose

"I don't know how to feel, but I wanna try." This lyric is a powerful reminder for us to reconnect with our purpose. Why did we choose to lead? Was it to make a difference, to inspire, to innovate?

Reflecting on these motivations can reignite our passion and help us find our way, even in the darkest times.

Finding Strength in Support

Leaders often feel they must carry the weight alone, but that's far from the truth. Seeking advice, mentorship, and emotional support is vital. Building a network of support provides the encouragement and strength needed to navigate through tough times.

We are stronger together.

Making a Lasting Impact

Leadership is about more than achieving goals; it's about making a meaningful impact.

Reflecting on the legacy we wish to create can provide direction and purpose. It's about the positive influence we leave on our teams and organizations.

Every small action counts.

Compassionate Reflection

In our quest for purpose, may we always find compassion for ourselves and others. Each moment of doubt is an opportunity for growth, and every act of kindness leaves a lasting impact.

Together, we can make a difference.

With kindness, Will
