What I love about Iowa

As my one-year anniversary approaches, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the year that’s passed and all that I’ve learned about this amazing place—University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

I am humbled by the tremendous responsibility that we have to the people of Iowa City, Johnson County, and all of Iowa. And more than all of that, I am amazed by our wonderful team—the faculty, the clinical staff, the clerical staff, and everyone else—that makes it possible for us to deliver care to our patients.

One of my biggest surprises of the first year is the growing number of Iowans that continue to choose us as their health care provider of choice. In the face of rising volumes in our clinics, emergency rooms, operating rooms, and hospital units, I see a team that continues to rise to the occasion to always put our patients first and ensure that we deliver the highest level of care.

An example of this is when the seven-bed 7JPP Medical Observation Unit helped out the Emergency Department on an exceptionally busy night. You can read more about this by clicking below. Their story is one of many that shows our employees’ dedication to patients in all situations, at all times. 

Looking ahead, my leadership team and I are making additional investments in staffing, facilities, and better operations to ensure our staff get the support they need to deliver the highest level of care to our patients. These changes will not happen overnight, but everyone will see the changes over the next several months.

In the face of new volume and facilities challenges, we’re continually working to change the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics to better meet our community’s needs. And I’m confident that we have the right people here to make the right changes.
