What I look for in MarTech leaders
I often get asked about the qualities that I look for when hiring leaders in MarTech. More specifically, in areas like Marketing Automation, Engineering, Analytics, Localization, SEO and Program Management. Selfishly, when I respond I talk about the aspects of myself that I believe make me a good MarTech leader:
- Loyalty and dedication. To the people they work with, and the company. I tend to err towards folks who build immediate trust and bonds with their colleagues that's difficult to break. That said, their loyalty and dedication shouldn't be foolishly blind.
- Intelligence and knowledge of the MarTech landscape. Does the person have an analytical and systems-oriented brain? They don't have to have been a developer, but they innately understand MarTech and can build innovative solutions to complex problems. They like to stay on the leading edge of MarTech by creating mutually-beneficial relationships with key vendors in the space.
- Leadership qualities and experience. Do people love working for you? And not just because you're nice, but because you build the appropriate amount of trust, prove you care about people, and then challenge them to be their best selves. It's a leader's job to create a safe environment for people to do their best work, and then empower them to continuously push past their current ceiling.
- Accountability and resilience. These aren't simply "words" - they're a way of life. MarTech leaders should value responsibility, hard work, accountability, and resilience. They lead by example in this area and can motivate people and teams to be highly accountable to themselves and their work (stakeholders, clients) without overusing the "stick". And when things get tough, they never throw their hands up in the air.
- A unique perspective. I know all of the normal MarTech speak, and want my leaders to as well; however, it should only be used as an input and not as an operating model. MarTech leaders should always have a unique perspective in this space and should not be afraid to put them out there and then continue to refine them with their teams.
- You are a JOY to work with. Can they bring all of the above, AND still not be an asshole to work with? If not, that's not the person I'm looking for.
What do you all look for when hiring MarTech leaders?
