What I learnt from shoelaces?

What I learnt from shoelaces?

For years, I have struggled with shoelaces opening up in middle of a run. I have to step aside and tie the shoelace, only for it to come undone again in a few kilometres. For someone like me who loves running, I have lost a lot of precious time to tying the shoelace a few times during every run. The problem is compounded as I now see my daughters do the same thing. In all honestly I admit that I correct them that they are not tying the shoelaces right. Never once did I think that I could be doing the same thing. I could be tying it wrong. Nor has anyone corrected me over so many years or guided me to how this could have been done better.

Only recently, I overhead someone commenting that there is a particular way to tying the shoe lace which can prevent this from happening. I finally managed to get to our dear friend google for the answer. Lo and behold, I found lots of valuable insights. Indeed, I have been tying my shoelaces wrong the whole time. There is a very subtle difference in how you tie it so that it does not come undone during long runs or walks. The best resource is however a wonderful 3 minute TED talk by Terry Moore, which I encourage you to listen. These three minutes can end up saving quite a few valuable minutes of your life and also for your next of kin.

Importantly I also realise that there must be many other habits that we have all picked up over a period of time, which we continue to do the incorrect way. What could they be !!!

Thank you for sharing this! It is amazing how we learn things that serve the purpose at a given point in time only to unlearn and relearn them again at another point in time.? :)

Interesting and insightful short article Manoj . You are right .. so many habits which we may have picked over years which if changed may make a big impact ... the issue is stopping and analyzing one habit a time !
