In his speech, he says he has three things he needs every day:
· Someone to look up to
· Someone to look forward to
· Someone to chase
Below are my thoughts on each of these and how it helps me in my everyday life.
Someone to look up to
What struck me about this is that we have someone to look up to a lot of time. It could be a person or like in his case his faith. For me, it is also my faith in Jesus. So how do I implement this daily?
The important thing is to make sure I behave to make the person I look up to proud. So, I ask myself, “Is Jesus proud of the way I dealt with each situation?”. Doing this keeps you focused on what is important to you. So, if I have an employee that is being exceedingly difficult, do I handle it in a way Jesus would? If yes, then I am doing great; if not, oh dear, I failed and have some work to do.
If you work like this, it will bring the best out of you.
Someone to look forward to
This is so true. If you don’t have someone to look forward to once you leave work, whom do you share the good and the bad of the day with. I know for me, if I have had a difficult day, it is so great to get home to my wife as she will be there to support me and listen to me rant about something or someone.
This helps you get it off your chest, move on, and at the same time, you have not caused any issues. But if you had a great day, it is also good to come home and have someone to share with and celebrate with you.
Someone to chase
I had never thought of it in this way before. Normally we always aim to be the next Bill Gates or similar, but you never will reach your true potential if you do that. But if you use Matthew McConaughey advice, you will always be striving to be the best version of you.
As he says, you will never reach that, which is fine as you keep pushing and improving. So, you need to think about this and see where my hero would be in ten years from now. Then that is what you aim for.
Following his advice has improved my life and made me look at things differently.
Have you tried it? Has it helped you?
