Yesterday; I had the opportunity of attending a career expo hosted by Ascentech at the Muson Center at Onikan, Lagos. I and eleven other colleagues were chosen by the Registrar of Covenant University.
The first Speaker; Mr Victor Banjo, was the highlight of the program for me (maybe it was because my attention span was still on a 100%). He emphasized on self branding, seeing yourself as a brand and not a product. This would help you to present yourself well on the different platforms of social media. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about his presentation. He emphasized on how you ought to keep learning and searching for knowledge. Also, get familiar with the news and what is happening globally; read magazines like : Forbes, Business Insider, Times etc. Then he spoke about building your network and keeping up with your connections.I think most people just forget the aspect of maintaining a network. If it takes you too long to get something, then your network is poor. In addition, it was such a wonderful feeling when I discovered his first degree was in English.
Another speaker, Dr Shogo spoke about "Thinking Your Way Into Opportunities". developing your talents into valuable skills, Gaining insight with the help of mentors and role models etc. From him I learnt that hard work is not just smart work but hard work is forging ahead when you don't feel like it and want to give up.
The Registrar of Covenant University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo spoke about understanding the times that we live in, the importance of giants that have gone ahead of you and getting sponsors for your dream.
Mrs Tinuke Okusaga, a Talent Manager and HR Manager at PWC spoke about being strategic with your career, having ethical values, building and maintaining strong relationships, creating good content, delivering results for your company; She also spoke about packaging yourself as someone worthy of emulation, identify yourself as a brand and not a product and be tactical.
Mr Dayo Omolade made a profound statement that money should not be the only motivation for a job, be passionate about it, influence your area of specialization with notable ideas, ground-breaking delivery of results and don't stop learning.
In total, I enjoyed every part of the program, took some notes down and was high-spirited by the time I left. Now, I'm indeed certain that PR is the career I'd want to pursue and more articles would come in this area. This article is to the first of many to come, adding more relevance as I build my career.
Thank you for reading.
