What I learned this week... The Dunning-Kruger Effect
David Byck
Accelerating Business Outcomes and Revenue Performance through the ValueSelling Framework
A great TED-Ed video titled "Why incompetent people think they're amazing" describes the effect which occurs where people fail to assess their own level of competence — or incompetence — at a task and therefore consider themselves much more competent than everyone else [is this why coaching can be a difficult activity sometimes :)]
This lack of awareness is attributed to their lower level of competence robbing them of the ability to critically analyze their performance, leading to a significant overestimation of their abilities. And it seems that the lower quartile (incompetent) tends to be the ones to overestimate the most.
The short video (https://youtu.be/pOLmD_WVY-E) does a great job or explaining the concept and relating it to everyday life but the takeaways are key:
- Actively seek feedback,
- Keep learning, and
- When arguing with a fool, make sure the other person is not doing the same thing (best line of the year... thus far...)
