What I Learned About Partnerships

What I Learned About Partnerships

The Do’s and Don’ts

Partnerships can make or break your business. Over time, I’ve learned that success in partnerships isn’t just about finding the right people—it’s about showing up, creating value, and staying consistent. Here’s my take on what works and what doesn’t:

? Don’t:

  1. Focus only on the short-term: Partnerships built on quick wins tend to fizzle out.
  2. Ignore alignment: If your goals and values don’t align, no amount of effort will make the partnership work.
  3. Rush into agreements: Jumping in without fully understanding the other party’s strengths, weaknesses, or priorities can lead to unmet expectations.
  4. Make it one-sided: If you’re only thinking about what you’ll gain, you’ll lose trust quickly.
  5. Skip the follow-through: A great first meeting doesn’t mean much if you don’t stay in touch and deliver on promises.
  6. Assume referrals will come to you: Referrals need nurturing. It’s not a “set it and forget it” game.

? Do:

  1. Invest in relationships: Partnerships thrive when there’s mutual trust and respect. Take the time to genuinely connect and understand the other party’s needs.
  2. Target the right people: Focus on partners and referral sources who align with your goals and serve the same audience. Quality over quantity.
  3. Leverage shared opportunities: Work together on events, content, or joint initiatives that amplify both of your efforts.
  4. Provide value first: Be the one to offer something—whether it’s a referral, resource, or advice—before asking for anything in return.
  5. Communicate consistently: Keep the conversation going, even when there’s no immediate deal or opportunity. Partnerships are built over time, not overnight.
  6. Use a system: Track your outreach, meetings, and follow-ups to ensure no opportunity falls through the cracks. A structured approach saves time and builds trust.

One Wonderful Thing I Learned About Partnerships

Partnerships aren’t just about business—they’re about people. One of the most rewarding parts of building partnerships has been the friendships I’ve gained along the way. I’ve met incredible individuals from all walks of life, and many of these relationships have become friendships I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.

One thing I truly appreciate about partnerships is the unexpected full-circle moments. Sometimes, years later, you’ll end up doing business with someone simply because you kept things genuine. You didn’t ask for anything, you gave referrals without needing to be asked, and you approached the relationship authentically.

The trust you build when you show up like this stays with people. I can honestly say that if you’ve crossed paths with me over the years, and you give me a call, I’ll answer. That’s the beauty of partnerships—whether it’s business, life, or both, they create lasting connections.

What have you learned about partnerships? I’d love to hear your stories.
