What I Learned Moving From Austin to Seattle To Work With Microsoft
My transition moving to Seattle to further my career was not perfect.
My first few weeks, I didn't even have a place to live, but thanks to the grace of one of my awesome fraternity brothers, I made due, and I eventually found a lovely studio not too far from work!
Fortunately, I've been meeting and learning from some AMAZING people at work and outside of work!
My friend John Marty (left) is one of them!
If you're thinking of moving to a new city for a job or to start a career, be mindful of two things:
1. Pick a city that will foster your growth.
It's one thing to factor your salary and benefits, but don't forget to factor your cost of living and the other amenities that a city can provide.
You don't want to end up hating where you live.
Before choosing where you want to work next, decide HOW you want to live and if WHERE you see opportunties aligns with HOW you live.
2. Surround yourself with the right people.
Join professional interest groups in your local area or attend local events that align to your passion/interest areas.
A city can be a cultural melting pot.
You don't need to travel to experience the world, if you're living in an environment that brings it to you.
