What I Learned from My Father’s Death

What I Learned from My Father’s Death

Imagine never knowing whether your father is dead or alive.

If you can imagine, it would be tough. Unfortunately, this happened to me. To be honest, I have been reluctant to post this because of just how personal it is. But the unfortunate circumstances around what I am about to tell you truly changed me. And if you are on this journey with me, you should "see" all of me. That includes the good, the bad, and everything in between.?

Leaders can achieve better working relationships, loyalty, and revenues simply by changing their listening strategy.

Organizations are caught up in the Great Resignation because team members have not felt heard for a long time. Even with a renewed focus on human resources and DEI initiatives, we aren’t hearing each other.

I believe what we need is a new change model for organizational listening. In this new book, I illustrate the five steps in the "cycle of listening":

  1. Recognize the Unsaid: Pick up important signals, including nonverbal ones, in our environments.
  2. Seek to understand: Step outside our own experiences to uncover the needs and perceptions of our colleagues.
  3. Decode: Reflect on what we hear to gain a deeper understanding.
  4. Act: Apply this understanding to create and communicate a plan of action.
  5. Close the loop: Connect the dots between what we hear and what we will do in response.

This book will help break our current listening cycles, so we can implement one that honors all parties and works for the long haul.

Heather, this was beautifully written. What an inspiration you are to find and write about opportunities to learn and seek comfort during a time of such conflicted emotions. I am so sorry for your loss and what was certainly a difficult journey of not knowing for so many years.

Thank you for sharing this - deeply personal stories like this are very difficult to share and yet so impactful when shared. Love the vulnerability, candor, and authenticity.

Heather R Younger thank you for sharing your sensitive memories. A phrase that is heard occasionally is 'communicate at a ratio of two ears and one mouth'. I wholeheartedly agree tha listening is vital for genuine human connection. With listening there is gentle body-language. Not listening; often when an individual is planning an answer while supposedly listening. Real listening is empathetic. Real listening will crest confidence in the person explaining or sharing an issue or indeed a positive experience. There is sadness and happiness. A very fine account.
