What I learned from Mr James Demers at Nortel – Part 3

Continuing on from last week, I am happy to share another lesson this week. I am going back to Mr. James Demers again this week, with another important lesson that I learned from him.

Be happy that you have problems.

I remember distinctly, about another discussion that I was having with James after I picked up the business development role for India.

I was complaining to James that the products that I am selling have too many issues, there are gaps in the features making products unsuitable for the market. The product issues take too long to resolve, etc.

James, in his own style, just asked me, "Do you know why I have you here?" I was perplexed, he then explained that he has me in my role, because our products were not perfect. He said if our solution was perfect, I will just need one accountant and one security guard.

I could understand the accountant piece but could not fathom the security guard, so out of curiosity, I asked him why security guard?

He said, there will be quite a rush to buy the product, so we will need the security guard to organize the queue.

So be glad that you have problems, and that you get to solve them. Do look see them as impediments, but opportunities to apply your mind and a chance to prove yourself.

Stay tuned for more next week!
