What I Learned from Dermatology About the Power of Story

I recently had the delightful opportunity to work with the incredible support staff from dermatology offices across North Carolina. The day was designed not just to update them on office policies and educate them but also to celebrate their contributions and strengthen their team bond. It was the perfect setting for what I love to do.

We shared a lot of laughter and delved into how stress is less about our circumstances and more about the narratives we craft in response. I shared a personal story about how a dermatology office, much like theirs, transformed my son's life—not just his skin, but his spirit too. This set the stage for a powerful discussion on recognizing and owning our 'superpowers.' We even donned superhero capes, where everyone wrote down not only their strengths but also the admirable qualities they see in their colleagues.

The highlight? A music video customized just for them, featuring their faces and celebrating the power of their work. It was a hit!

Here are three key takeaways from our day together:

  1. Change is Inevitable, but Our Stories Define Its Impact: We control the narrative around change, and that in turn shapes our emotions and overall well-being.
  2. Mindset Shifts Require Active Rewriting: True change in mindset comes from a deliberate effort to replace negative scripts with empowering narratives.
  3. Beyond Treatments, It’s About Connections: While treatments bring patients through the door, it's the personal connections that make them stay. It’s about the people, not just the procedures.

A huge thank you to the Dermatology Group of the Carolinas for your dedication to healing not just bodies but hearts as well. Your work truly makes a difference. Now, go trust your cape!
