What I Learned from Being Defriended on Facebook

Have you ever been defriended on Facebook?
Recently, I was. It all started with a mission called Hydrate the Homeless MKE.
My wife, Rachel, put up a post that explained their mission -- providing water for people who are homeless. She also shared that our house was a drop off location if any of our friends & family felt inclined to donate.
Rachel is passionate about this local effort because countless people will receive necessary access to water. Maybe to cool down a bit, maybe to brush their teeth, maybe to clean up after not having access to a shower ... or simply to hydrate their bodies, a basic human need.
What I learned from her post is that 5% of people wanted nothing to do with the cause because they thought disposable water bottles would pollute the environment. They're not necessarily wrong.
Today, I call this type of disagreement or difference of opinion "The Rule of 5%." No matter what you think, say or do, 5% of people will like nothing about it.
Let me share some examples. According to a YouGov study, 5% of people hate everything about Thanksgiving. If you're in sales, 5% of people will hate your product. If you're in customer service, 5% of the people won't like your personality. If you're in management, 5% of people won't appreciate your leadership style.
Don't stop because of the 5% of people that don't like what you do. Keep going because of the 95% of people for whom you can actually make a difference.

5 年You raise awareness on several important concepts regarding social media. 1) “Regardless of ‘Like.’” Post what you want to put out in the world, irregardless of “Likes.” 2) Don’t Back Down. Causes cause conflict, especially in this “anonymous and trolls” environment. Be cause driven if you believe in it and want to make a difference. 3) They don’t get a “vote” if they aren’t in the arena getting their ash kicked. Talk is cheep unless they are riding the bike. 4) Engagement doesn’t show impact. Keep impacting. Public interaction doesn’t show engagement. I.e., one photo, handful of “Likes” over 4,000 views.
