What I Learned 10 Years Later

What I Learned 10 Years Later

Approximately 10 years ago I was awarded one of the City of Bellflower’s?most prestigious awards, “Bellflower Recognizes Acts of Valor and Outstanding service (Bravo Award).” It stemmed from an incident where I did my civic duty and helped out an elderly resident after being mugged and helping apprehend the suspect who also happened to be tagging up the city and a known gang member. ???? The point is I did what was right and was nominated for an award, at the time I told myself anyone would have done the same and did not deserve any recognition but the variables at the time led to that award. Today, I realize it was a bit dangerous and reckless and many would not have intervened but it was done for the greater good. During the award ceremony, the master of ceremonies and local news anchor stated that he covered stories where "heroes" get shot or hurt doing what I did.

I had local news anchor Marc Brown and actor Beau Bridges as presenters.?In 2013, I was not living in a great place in my personal and spiritual life and did not practice the principles that the award stood for although on the outside it seemed like it. I suffered from not being good enough and a severe case of imposter syndrome. This is why many of us never look at or appreciate our accomplishments and take the time to be grateful for the opportunities we have in front of us. I did not grasp or appreciate that precious moment in my life.

A decade later after receiving this prestigious award was a humbling experience, and I am grateful for the lessons learned throughout my journey. I am proud of my accomplishments and overcoming challenges, even at times when I struggled with impostor syndrome. However, this recognition has shown me the value of hard work and dedication and has reminded me to trust in my abilities and not let self-doubt hold me back. I am thankful for this reminder to embrace my achievements and continue to strive to be better.?I am also reminded that in communities, every day, communities have folks that care so much about making the places where they live, work, and play better and work tirelessly in making that happen one day at a time. They do it because it’s the right thing to do and aren’t awarded for it or need recognition, they just need to see that they are making a difference.?I see this in many communities I serve today. When I see it, I thank them for their service to their community and acknowledge them when I can.

Today, I also have the opportunity to appreciate the little city where I live, where I raised a family, provided me employment, and the opportunity to serve. The award means more today than it did 10 years ago because it’s a reminder to just be a better person today. If it wasn’t for my little community I do not think I could appreciate the love and care that others have for their communities today.?

Sometimes you just need a little reminder to keep you moving forward. Today, thank you, Google?for reminding me. It's those little god pokes that make our day start off great.
