After completing more than 5 years as a full time academician, here are the 3 most important things I have learnt about teaching. I felt it would be nice to share this with people and get their points of view. After all, in life each one of us is a student and/or teacher in some form or the other.
Teaching is:
- Less about what you teach, and more about what your students learn.
- Less about answering the question, and more about questioning the answer
- Less about being a sage on the stage, and more about being a guide on the side
This understanding has helped me a great deal in my work as a teacher.

8 年Agree. Also, consider this. It's less about what you teach. It's more about what you learn. If I haven't learnt at least one new thing, at the workshops I run, I consider it a failure.

9 年I have been teaching now for five years and my experience has taught me that the best gift that a teacher can give to a student is to treat her with dignity and respect and make her feel good about her own self.This is possible when we help students to realize and identify their strengths and not make them feel guilty about their weaknesses. This contribution of a teacher can be life changing in a positive way.

9 年Well said, Anand! Am happy to see that the emphasis is now more on learning by doing in government schools. That's a good step but what is still lacking is teachers redefining their role in the lines you have shared.
