What I have Learnt in 2017!
Iman Pouryounes
Business Manager - Seafood Division | Gamification & Engagement Strategist | Trade Marketing Leader
Finally, a year full of excitement and sales pressure passed; a year filled with many sales gamification, competitions and trade marketing activities.
I spent some time reviewing my 2017, and I came up with the following achievements:
Merging two product lines can be fun: I confess before the merge, I was totally nervous and worried about the future of the business and my career; but now I can claim that merging can be one of the most strategic decisions a business can take. What I have learnt from the process of merging Ice-cream and Ready Meal in just a year, can be written as a book!
I cannot say it was easy; watching colleagues waving goodbye day after day, fills you with uncertainty, doubt and worriness. But let’s be honest: life is filled with comes and goes. What we should do is to adopt with the new situation and take advantage of new opportunities. Maybe the most important thing is not to have presuppositions about the future; let it happen and face the reality with ease and mindfulness.
Following your interests can happen wherever you are: Definitely digital marketing is one of the highlights in my mind. I entered Pemina for digital marketing and then switched into trade marketing before the merge; and after the merge I found myself in the world of category management. Through this year, digital marketing experiences and abilities helped me to move forward towards my new goals. What you do is not important; it’s the way of doing it that matters.
Selling is an Interdisciplinary field: We had so many gamifications and competitions this year; but what if no one participates?! Here is an important point: when you want to deal with people, you should read their mind, know their way of thinking and know how to persuade them; in one word you need to know psychology of selling to people. Here, for us people mean the sales team. You should find out a way to increase their engagement. Only knowing what you want to sell cannot reach you anywhere; knowing to whom you want to sell is what can help you. Golden massage: Sales & Marketing is rooted in psychology.
Rewarding is not only money based: There are many ways of positive reinforcement; Money is not the only way to persuade personnel to participate in a task. Sometimes even a pat on the shoulder can boost inner motivation. There are some feelings which are critical in such tasks, for instance: self-verification, social confirmation, etc.
Insisting is important, but only on what you have research about and studied thoroughly: let your minds be creative; work on your ideas, analyze the circumstances and only then do not lose any chance for presenting them. I am truly happy that I was able to finish this year by presenting many creative gamification ideas and not losing any chance for putting them in action.
Researching can go on forever: Remember you cannot wait to finish researching and then go for action. You should start doing something somewhere in the middle of research.
Stepping out of your box: Sometimes it is good to do your duties out of box. Getting trapped in routines can stop you from being creative. This may change boring tasks to interesting games.
Putting some color in your presentations: "A picture is worth a thousand words". Even Grownups still like illustrations and colors and pictograms. You can boost the effect of your presentation by color.
Working in a team: When you are in a team, your abilities are doubled and you can learn from your teammates. Actually, working in a team, can boost your personal and also interpersonal skills. And what would be better than being among people who can support you in different ways.
