What Will I Gain If I Let Go?
A Moment of Discovery - written by Christina 'Kicki' Peterson
“Just the other day, I decided to try something different in my classroom. I brought in a deck of coaching cards, curious about how my students might respond. Usually, I am careful with my plans, but this time, I chose to let go of control and let the students guide the process.
At first, not all the students were on board, and I found myself questioning my decision: Why am I doing this? I felt a bit defensive, wondering if I’d made the wrong decision. But then I paused and shifted my perspective. Instead of focusing on what wasn’t working, I chose to observe with curiosity.
Those who embraced the exercise shared with huge enthusiasm the benefits they gained. By sitting down next to each student and asking them questions myself, I noticed even the hesitant ones beginning to open up. Letting go of my usual expectations gave me the chance to connect with my students on a deeper level and reminded me that stepping back doesn’t mean giving up, it means creating space for growth and connection.”
Coaching Principle: Empowering Others & Self-Compassion
“When we let go of the need to control everything, we empower students to take ownership of their learning. This practice doesn’t just benefit them, it also helps us as educators to grow. By reflecting with curiosity rather than defensiveness, we model humility and raise trust in the classroom.”
“‘Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up.”’ - Brené Brown.
Letting go of perfection doesn’t mean settling, it means stepping into growth with a curious and open heart.
Reflection Exercise 1: Letting Go of Perfection
Think about one area of teaching where you tend to over-plan or hold on too tightly. Is it lesson structure? Classroom management? Grading? Imagine easing up in that area. What might you gain, for yourself and your students, if you let it go?
Then think about a recent feedback experience that felt challenging. Journal any defensive feelings that arose and consider how adopting a curious mindset might have shifted your perspective. What could you learn from the feedback to improve your practice?
Invitation:

By letting go of what no longer serves us and leaning into curiosity, we create room for meaningful connections and powerful growth. Thank you for sharing this reflective journey with me!
