What I am saying
Today I was asked about the change in tone and content of my posts in my retirement. For many years I aimed to say and develop generic ideas about blockchain. I have very little left to say about that. But I do find that I still want to say something about democracy, freedom and equal opportunities in a non blockchain context. It’s really the same line of thought. That is the philosophy, politics and economics of how a community is governed but no longer about the supporting technology.
I do think it is important to stand up and be counted to challenge the unreasonable ideas of the left wing. Being retired makes that much easier as I find myself politically opposed to the executives of my ex employer. So I must say what others may not be so able to say.
Incentives
I have been uncomfortable with the DEI in the workplace for 3 or 4 years but it seems to be getting much worse and going too far in the last year or so. When equality means equal outcomes regardless of merit but based on group identity and quotas then I think the line is crossed. That line was crossed in IBM in the current times. Any commercial business exists to create maximum shareholder value which requires recruitment and promotion and reward based on ability (merit) and not based on political identity group membership. Everyone should get a fair chance and the system should not favour those of favoured political identity groups over others. Rights and duties
Every right has an equal duty or responsibility. Meaning in life lies in the execution of duty to oneself, family and then community. It's time to stop demanding rights and instead take up our duties.
Christmas is about family. I am so grateful to have worked for #IBM for the best part of 30 years so I can call IBM as family. But what is IBM? Its shareholders, employees, customers or executives? And what should I say if its executives go really, really wrong? It is wrong to say that IBM will recruit or promote you because your skin is black and not brown or white. It is wrong for IBM to say - we will fire you if you do not promote a black skin over a brown or white one. My IBM family is in deep trouble. I will speak out. Arvind Krishna please show respect for all individuals or step down as IBM CEO.

1 年I don't know anything about IBM since Arvind took over but I have a few thoughts. DEI isn't about equality it's about equity, as illustrated in this picture. It's also not about fairness or about illegal immigrants. The idea is that if a company wants to sell things to the whole population then it needs a set of employees that is representative of that population. If the population is 30% green people or tall people or old people then having an employee population that is also 30% will mean that they are more likely to make things that they can sell to the most number of people. As an aside, when I was at IBM in the 90s my team leader, manager, 2nd line manager, 3rd line manager, and 4th line manager were all female.
