Unrealistic hope can be magical thinking. But humans and animals have the capacity to never give up, so hope can also be determination. It can also be our belief in destiny.

It's a profound drive to reach some goal.

Dogs and cats can walk across the country to find their humans again, humans will fight long after it is hopeless. So hope, in my opinion, is a very misused word and we use it for too many different things, including for faith. We believe therefore we have hope.

So every time we use the word hope we should define what we mean to know if it is deterministic, fateful, or faithful.
